Architects Go Head To Head

Curbed recently posted an article on how two architects are battling it out with updated plans for the Miami Beach Convention Center. The first architect, Bjarke Ingels, plans for a more colorful and energetic design. Whereas his competition, Rem Koolhaas, has a more futuristic and eclectic look. Botanical Gardens Support Convention Center Redevelopment

The South Florida Business Journal recently wrote an article on how expansion of botanical gardens could be vital for convention center improvement. Both South Beach ACE and Portman CMC agree that expanding these gardens is crucial. It would serve as a way to turn unused land into a lush landscape. Residents of this area will be able to integrate with other communities while sharing this redeveloped space.

Portman – CMC Group Discusses Changes to Convention Center Plans

South Florida Business Journal recently interviewed Jack Portman, from the Portman – CMC Group, on their plans for the Miami Convention Center. The Portman – CMC Group proposed new designs that call for approximately 100,000 square feet of retail space, which is less than half of what the group initially proposed. Portman said this decision was made based on a combination of feedback from the public and the city commission.

Jack Portman went on to discuss their other plans for the Miami Convention Center, including separate convention space and hotel space, a search for complementary retailers to support Lincoln Road businesses, plans for a public transit hub, and their thoughts on the competing bid from South Beach ACE.

Portman – CMC Group Scales down Retail Space in Convention Center Bid

Jack Portman, vice chairman of Portman Holdings and John Portman & Associates, recently announced that the Portman – CMC bid for the Miami Convention Center will now propose less retail and leasable space than the initial plans. This decision was made after the team received feedback from the public and merchants on Lincoln Road. The new plans propose approximately 100,000 square feet of retail space, which is about half of the initial amount of space proposed. “It’s an evolving process,” Portman said.

Ugo Colombo Presents Proposal for Miami Convention Center with Portman – CMC Group

Local 10 recently covered the public’s reaction to the proposed plans for the Miami Convention Center. Both proposals involve making the Convention Center into a more open area with parks and other attractions for the resident’s to enjoy. “We want to make it interesting, fun and inviting to create an overall urban environment that makes it feel like the community’s living room,” said developer Jack Portman, Ugo Colombo’s partner in the project.

Miami Beach Residents Hear Renovation Pitches from Portman – CMC Group

Ugo Colombo, with the Portman – CMC Group, presented their ideas for the Miami Convention Center Renovations to Miami Beach residents. This was the resident’s first look at what the Convention Center could look like after renovations and both firms presenting are planning to take their opinions into consideration for the final proposal. The Portman – CMC Group plans to focus on creating harmony between the building structures and the landscaping so that visitors will be able to enjoy spending time outdoors while having the option of being in the shade.

Ugo Colombo Presents Plans for Miami Convention Center

Ugo Colombo and the Portman-CMC Group were recently featured in the South Florida Business Journal. The article discussed Portman-CMC Group’s plans for the Miami Convention Center and the plans of the competing proposal from South Beach ACE. According to the article, Ugo Colombo will be working with developer Portman Holdings, “Cirque du Soleil, Bal Harbour Shops, architect Bjarke Ingels and West 8, which created the Miami Beach Soundscape next to the New World Symphony.” The group’s proposal would call for a diagonal landscaped square of four acres in the southwest corner of the property. This would serve as the hub of the neighborhood and the convention center would serve as spokes.
